In my lifetime, never did I expect to meet a prospective missionary from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from war-torn Vietnam. Elder Dao, convert of three years from Ho Chi Minh city, entered the MTC two weeks ago, here to refine his English skills and to serve shortly in the Georgia Atlanta Mission. He will be the first Vietnamese missionary to serve state-side. There have been a few other missionaries from Vietnam, but who have been assigned to preach the gospel in Cambodia. Allow me to share his story...
Elder Dao was born in Vietnam and at the age of 15 years old, his mother sent him to Finland to study one year in the high school there to learn English while living with his aunt. While there, he quite accidentally met the Mormon missionaries and was converted, but was too young to gain permission to join the Church. Meanwhile, back in Vietnam, his mother's business failed, so she went to Cambodia seeking employment. While there, she met the Mormon missionaries, was converted and joined the church. During this period of time, and quite independently, another young Vietnamese man, Brother Khoi, age 30, while working in Cambodia, was also converted. Elder Dao related that Brother Khoi returned to his homeland and became the first Branch President in Vietname. Likewise, Elder Dao returned from Finland to join his mother who had returned home and learned that she joined the Church--of course, he became a member. Now this tiny, little branch has grown to over 100 members--all from the promptings of the Spirit to a few natives. When asked how the saints there are progressing, he joyously related that "they are so faithful and read the Book of Mormon every day!" Even today, the Church does not have permission to send ordained missionaries at this time; however, just over the border in Cambodia, the Church is alive and well.
And to think...just 30 years ago...the blood of countless Americans was spilt to bring these people democracy, only to fail, and So. Vietnam to fall into the hands of oppressors. Heavenly Father's eyes have been upon these sweet, simple people and the bands of oppression are loosening and the gospel is alive and well! Another miracle!!
