Three Strong Women of Faith

Elaine Dalton, General President of Young Women;
Julie Beck, General President of Relief Society;
Cheryl Lant, General President of Primary Organization
On Monday, June 23, these beautiful, capable and energetic heads of three of the largest organizations in the world were interviewed by Bruce Hafen of the First Quorum of the Seventy in a special training meeting held for wives of Mission Presidents. Also in attendance were four apostles, e.g. Elders Oaks, Perry, Nelson and Scott and Elder Richard Hinckley, also of the First Quorum of Seventy who likewise serves on the Church Missionary Committee.
For almost one hour, these three sisters were quizzed as to how the auxiliaries of the church can assist in strengthening and retaining new members, especially women. Sister Beck quoted Elder Eyring by stating that "God builds branches around strong women!" Women play a strong role in building up the church and are important, informal role models. She also reminded all that the auxiliaries of the church are to assist people in going to the temple to partake of sacred ordinances and seal families together.
"Practice and do" were key phrases discussed. It is not enough to merely teach, but role model correct behavior; mentors are needed for new members. All members are responsible for retention, but Mission Presidents have a special responsibility to care about retention! Elder Hafen mentioned that he was acquainted with a new mission president, who upon arrival in his new assignment, called a special meeting for all new members who had been baptized within the past two years. What a powerful message!
The auxiliaries are a powerful resource. There is a large army of prospective elders who need sisters to assist--they are a gold mine. We are agents to gather Israel. We are His servants and this is His work!! Let's get busy!!
In conclusion, Elder Nelson stated that he preferred the phrase "preparation for exaltation" rather than the word 'retention.' Auxiliaries of the Church are meant to do exactly that--assist new and struggling members toward exaltation!
